I work with people to make the changes they want by identifying the things they are already good at or interested in; then we look at how those strengths can be expanded to get more control in life and find emotional balance. In clinical language I say that I practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with a Client-Centered approach. I also utilize practical mindfulness to help bring awareness to ourselves, the world around us, and how we interact with that world.
I work to create a relaxed and accepting environment where we can explore those uncomfortable and vulnerable areas that can throw us off balance. Humor is a big part of my practice as well as education. I try to meet each person where they are at and work with them to go as far as they want to go in their own growth.
An important aspect of my clinical approach comes from my own health and balance. I strongly believe that one should practice what they preach, with humility. I would never ask someone to do something I wouldn’t be willing to do. I lived in a residential Buddhist meditation house for 6 years and continue to use the concepts and yoga/meditation practices I learned to maintain my own wellness. It is important for me to help each person find their own balance and routines that work for them and their lifestyles.
I grew up a carpenter’s son and followed his example in my early adulthood. By my mid 20’s I began working with others by teaching guitar, after school sports, yoga, and meditation while continuing to work as a handyman. From 2012-2014 I was fortunate enough to be able to teach High School Psychology classes that included Adolescent Social Psychology, Intro to Psychology, and Positive Psychology. For my practicum in 2012 I spent a year at James Lick High School in East San Jose, CA working with individuals and groups. From 2013-2016 I was a community-based therapist meeting clients in their homes, at their schools, or in the community. I provided individual and family support throughout Santa Clara County. This was an invaluable training that allowed me to see what people would talk about in session, since I would be in their homes with them and often see the issues firsthand. In 2017 I worked at Brightquest Treatment Center in La Mesa, CA. This was an incredible experience. I worked in this residential facility with folks with severe psychiatric disorders that often also involved addiction. The intense nature of the treatment and regular interaction with clients provided a unique learning experience and genuine connections. I learned a great deal from the residential Milieu Therapy approach.
I also had the opportunity to work as a Military Family Life Counselor, supporting military service members and their families. I feel that I learned a lot and, since I was a Navy brat, I derive a great deal of meaning being able to give back to service members in this way.
Since 2018 I have been working in private practice helping children, teens, adults, and families in person and online. I continue to work on my professional development by studying, taking trainings, consulting with colleagues, and working to practice what I learn in a balanced way.
I am a huge music fan and often go to my guitar or music library as my first choice for self-care care or fun. I grew up in New Hampshire, so nature became a big part of my life and self care. I love to hiking, camping, or doing most anything in nature. I am also a big reader. Along with my personal and professional interest in trying to bolster my foundation and keep up with the latest findings through psychology books. I love to read history, Fantasy, and Sci-Fi. Although, I must admit that reading these days tends to be through audiobooks and podcasts. I also like to take on projects building things with wood. There’s something fun about starting a project I don’t know how to finish and then figuring out how to work my way through it.
I grew up in New Hampshire while my Mom lived in San Diego, California. As a result, most of our relationship was on the phone or through letters. Yes, actual letters with special stationary and everything, this was the 80’s and early 90’s mostly. The focus of our talks where often around the mind and self-growth. From that experience I knew that I wanted to study Psychology and try to help people. The challenges of my own growth only strengthened my resolve to help others through their challenges. I have a great deal of respect and admiration for people doing the work of self-betterment and it is incredibly fulfilling to be able to do this as a profession.
It is my intention to be on your team to help you reach your goals. I will educate you and encourage you to do what you need to do for yourself. I will create a compassionate space where failure is not a problem, but a learning experience. I will be in your corner!
